Beverley Folk Festival 2017 is a Resounding Success

The sun was out, the sky was blue and Beverley Folk Festival 2017 was another resounding success.

Sun, song, dance and fun were the order of the weekend. Festival first-timers David and Rebecca King travelled with their three young sons from Gloucestershire.

David said:

“This is our first time at Beverley Folk Festival and we really enjoyed it. The whole event has a really friendly vibe and it’s great that the whole family can attend together.”

Over 80 artists appeared over the weekend, including celebrated performers like Eddi Reader, Martin and Eliza Carthy, Lau, False Lights, Reg Meuross and Jon Boden, alongside new and upcoming musicians, many of whom are well on their way to success – Beverley is renowned for spotting newcomers who have gone on to become award-winning stars of the folk revival.

The festival also commits itself to supporting and nurturing young artists. Starting a few years ago with the Westwood Sessions for young musicians, singer Sarah Shiels has progressed to Area 2 for emerging professional musicians. Now a professional musician herself, she opened one of the Sunday night concerts.

She said:

“The Westwood Sessions and whole festival have become big parts of my life. The support and opportunities given to me and others have been amazing. It’s great to be part of a team that doesn’t just stage music, but also encourages it from the grass roots up.”

This view was echoed by festival chairman, Matt Snowden:

“Every year we strive to put on an event that will appeal both to folk aficionados and families seeking an enjoyable day out. With the help of an excellent programme and the wonderful weather, it was fantastic to see people of all ages joining together and enjoying the festival.”

The weekend also saw Morris and traditional dance teams parading through Beverley, adding some traditional colour to the town centre. Local pubs were also encouraged to put on their own entertainment, such as The Sun Inn, The Tiger Inn and Monks Walk who joined together to form the Festival Fringe.

Neil Pickford, landlord at the Monks Walk, said:

“We had an excellent weekend, with a whole host of local musicians performing both inside the pub and in our beer garden. It’s great to be part of the festival and long may both the main event and the fringe continue.”

Plans are underway for next year, when the festival celebrates its 35th anniversary – June 15th, 16th & 17th.

The 2018 line-up already includes The Lucy Ward Band, Calan and Greg Russell & Cairan Algar.

Tickets are already on sale at a special Early Bird price of £80 for a full weekend ticket – a saving of at least £40 off the final price.

BEVERLEY FRINGE : Sun Inn Kick Off Event With Ukulele Concert

BEVERLEY FRINGE : Sun Inn Kick Off Event With Ukulele Concert

Beverley Fringe Festival got underway at the Sun Inn with the popular venue hosting a number of Ukulele bands.

Groups from across the region were at the Sun Inn however it was the ‘home band’ who got proceedings underway.

Roy Dyson is organising the Ukulele sessions on behalf of the Beverley Fringe Festival. Speaking to HU17.net he said;

“We feel privileged to be playing at the Sun Inn. It is one of the top music venues on the East Coast. We have groups from Beverley, Cottingham, Howden and  also Pocklington.”

“It is vital that this fringe festival has brought back into the town. The biggest mistake the Beverley Folk Festival made was moving to the racecourse.”

“They wanted control of everything, the food, the venues and the drinks. Beverley its self was then cut out of the picture. They started charging hundreds of pounds per ticket.

“So what we are doing is bringing it back to the people by taking it back to the 70s and 80s. Anywhere you go within Beverley during the event there will be music going on.”

“It is not just folk music, there are also jazz acts and all sorts of other types of music.”

Sun Inn Home To Beverley’s Weekly Ukulele Group

Richard Price Licensee of the Sun Inn said;

“We have hosted the ‘World Ukulele Championship’ which a bit of a light-hearted event. It was started by Roy and Lynne around 4 years ago.”

“Over that time it has gained more interest so we have a number of groups taking part this year from all over the East Riding.”

 “Most of all it is a bit of fun and people getting together and also having a good play.”

The Sun Inn has its own Ukulele group which meets each Monday at the venue. Richard says as a result of those sessions some groups have been formed which now perform within the region.

Beverley Fringe Festival Has Gone Back To Basics

Richard also says that music is a vital part of the venue he runs in Beverley. He said;

“This venue has always been a music pub. It is important for the town to have a venue for those who want to say get away from watching sport.”

“There is a great live music scene in Beverley with lots of young talent coming through. Also, there is plenty of experienced talent and people just want to find somewhere to come and play.”

Richard says that while the Folk Festival was focused around the town things changed with the move. He now feels the Beverley Fringe Festival is filling the void left.

He said;

“This year because we had more time to organise things there is more on. The event is in its second year and is bigger and better.”

“What the Beverley Fringe Festival has done is simply gone back to basics. Getting people together who play in events that are mainly free of charge.”

“It is not just music. We have a men’s and ladies darts team while on a Sunday we do a fantastic Sunday dinner. Generally speaking, we are just a good solid community pub.”

“In all the time we have never won anything like this. After four years of trying I was very proud when we got into The Good Beer Guide and been there ever since.”

Sun Inn Landlord Will Now Travel To London For Finals

Yorkshire Cancer Research Benefit From Night Of Music At Sun Inn

Yorkshire Cancer Research is £1,200 better off thanks a fundraising event held at the Sun Inn Beverley.

Lynne Peterson who organised was thrilled with the total. She was also grateful to the support shown by the pub and the people who attended.

A musical night the event featured three acts including The Assembly Line, a group Lynne herself plays in.

Funds on the night were raised through the sale of tickets for a prize draw and donations. The event also received an anonymous donation of £500 which helped boost the final amount.

Commenting on the night Lynne said;

“This is the fourth cancer research fundraising I have organised in the past four years here at the Sun Inn.”

“I choose to do this event and support this charity as sadly I know people who have died from cancer. Also, I know people who have cancer now and know cancer survivors.”

“As a result of this, I think it is important that we try and make a contribution to charities that work specifically with cancer.”

“As always Richard and Lee here at the Sun Inn have been very supportive of the event. Richard and Lee know that we all love them. I also want to thank everyone for coming and supporting the night.”

Yorkshire Cancer Research Express Their Gratitude

Jane Jagger, Chairman of the Bridlington Fund Raising Committee at Yorkshire Cancer Research said;

“I would like to say a very big thank you to Lynne for organising this event and inviting us down.”

 “Yorkshire Cancer Research is Yorkshire’s very own cancer research charity. We are not part of any major charity, we are the biggest independent cancer fundraising charity.”

“Everything that is raised in Yorkshire is spent on research in Yorkshire. So, for example, it will at the moment we are really into early-stage diagnosis.”

“Events like this one are critical to helping us raise money for this work. There is only so much we can do as fundraisers.”

“So when people take on events and pass us the donations it is just brilliant. We really can not thank people enough.”

Let's Start Putting Life and Vitality Back Into Community Says MP
Let’s Start Putting Life and Vitality Back Into Community Says MP

MP Graham Stuart says it is time to start putting life and vitality back into the community. He is now calling for people to support local while remaining sensible when out.

Mr Stuart made the comments as a number of businesses in Beverley resumed trading following months of being in lockdown.

The MP was one of many people who visited the town’s pubs and restaurants. As will all guests he was asked to sign in on arrival.

Speaking to HU17.net he said;

“I am delighted to be in the Sun Inn which is the consistency entry for the Pub of Year. I have been speaking with Richard to see when that competition can get going again and see if the Sun can not only be the local champion but the national champion.”

“Richard and his team have put in a great deal of work to ensure the tables are socially distanced. Everyone in the pub certainly seems to be in a good mood.”

“The only thing that has stopped people smiling that broadly is the failure of their Member of Parliament to buy them all a drink.”

“To see the restaurants and pubs open again makes a big difference, especially for young people. It makes such a big difference as so many of my constituents are dependant on the hospitality industry.”

“There are thousands of people working in Beverley and Holderness for businesses that can now open.”

“Now they are open we have to try and be responsible so this area does not become one that sees a big COVID-19 spike.”

Support Local and Get Life and Vitality Back In Our Town

My understanding is that the local authority has been very strict ahead of reopening. I went to a cafe in Beverley and most of their tables were taped off. So it appears ERYC has been quite forceful though I would say people will feel that is the right thing to do.”

“Working alongside the local authority the cafe has opened again to make sure people stay safe. I think we all want a local authority that is on the front foot doing the right thing.”

“We have to clear that if the numbers start going the other way then there will be no choice but to shut it all down. That would be a disaster for the businesses, all the people who work in them and also our communities.”

“Let’s all get out there and support these businesses. They have gone for months without any revenue or income. So if you can go out support local businesses, buy local and let us start putting life and vitality back into the community.”

“There is no better way of doing it then support local shops, restaurants and pubs.”

Sun Inn Licensee Thrilled To Hear The Sound Of Customers Again

Richard Price, Licensee of the Sun Inn says it is great to be open again. Following weeks of being closed due to the lockdown, the popular Beverley local welcomed back customers at the weekend.

Richard said that he was pleased with how the weekend went adding that customers overall had been respectful of the rules.

Speaking to HU17.net Richard said;

“It feels great to be open once again here at the Sun Inn. We had a steady first day and a good flow of customers.  It was fully booked up from about 4 o’clock and had to turn a few people away, unfortunately.”

“All in all everyone was well behaved and stuck to the guidelines. If it continues like this it looks very good for the future. We are just glad to be open.”

During the lockdown, he says he has missed having customers in the pub while adding there has been plenty to do. He said;

“The thing we have missed the most is the sound of people in the pub. When we go upstairs it has been weird not hearing the buzz of people.”

“During the lockdown, it has been like going up after a shift but 24 hours a day.  It is so nice to be able to hear and see the people and get the feeling everyone is enjoying themself.”

Sun Inn Licensee Given Deep Clean During The Lockdown

Richard says that during the lockdown they found themselves looking at the clock and thinking about what they would have been doing.

Explaining how it has been to be closed he said;

“We would be sitting there thinking, what we would be doing at this time on Saturday or Sunday.  While we have still been doing take out Sunday dinners, the afternoons were our time to socialise with customers. That is something we have really missed.”

“There were other things like putting together quiz nights, so just to get it back to some sort of normality is great.”

While the pub may have been closed work has not stopped. Richard says their days have been filled with cleaning, he said;

“I have a new friend in the pub, she is called Hetty. Hetty is a vacuum cleaner Hetty and I get on really well!”

“We have also been busy decorating, we have refurbished the snug, varnished all the tables and backs of the chairs. Also, we have varnished the bar top and cleaned the floors, a full deep clean and made the most of it.”

Richard now hopes that residents will support the local pubs in Beverley, he said;

“Please come out and support the pubs if you can. I realise that there is some trepidation about coming out. If everybody abides by the rules and guidelines we can progress to getting live music back as well which we miss.”
